Karnov DVD Walkthrough
The Karnov Deluxe Edition Hidden Features Spoiler-filled Walkthrough:
click and drag the cursor over the invisible text to reveal the cheats
STEP ONE: go to the first menu and click on the Question Mark hidden above the "Play Movie" button. Pay the woman 20 coins and she will tell you "Karnov's shadow hides the first clue" and send you back to the first menu again. She is referring to a hidden K Mark that is located in the center of Karnov's shadow as he walks up and pauses at the gate. In order to highlight this K Mark you must go up to the K Mark seen behind the gates and move left.
STEP TWO: Click on the K Mark hidden in the center of Karnov's shadow to reveal the old man. He will tell you "to find the lock and find the key, behind the gates you'd like to be." He is referring to the two parts of the hidden Bonus Level 2: the secret location of the access menu and the pass key you will need to unlock it. Valuable clues are accessible from the K Mark located behind the gates but when you attempt to click on this K Mark you will find the "Gates Closed" message. More information is needed to complete your quest, follow the staircase from the old man's room and it will lead you back to the first menu. This time however, the K Mark beside "Bonus Level" is highlighted. That is where you should go to find your next clue.
STEP THREE: Directly under the "Premiere" feature on the Bonus Level menu screen there is a hidden Question Mark. Click on this Question Mark and pay the woman 10 coins. She will say "Are you STILLS looking for a way behind the gates?" and the staircase that appears will lead you back to the Bonus Level menu, this time with the K Mark next to "Stills" feature highlighted. This is where you need to look for your next clue.
STEP FOUR: Play the "Stills" feature and pay particular attention to the 21st picture, this picture contains your next clue. Picture 21 is of a family playing Nintendo and is book-ended by two pictures of Sean Chuthers and Deacon. Nintendo enthusiasts may recognize this picture from the original NES Deluxe Edition box however this version is slightly altered. On the screen of the family's TV you will see what should be the familiar image of the Karnov DVD opening menu: the flickering messed up intro screen. As the screen jumps an observant gamer will notice a small K Mark hidden within the quick flashing opening menu screen. The caption above reads "Look at that finger speed" indicating that precise timing will be required. To find your next clue you must now proceed to the DVD's opening screen. If your DVD menu button does not automatically return you to this screen you can get there by one of two ways. Either paying the incorrect amount to the old woman at the Question Marks or by selecting one of the numerous "Wrong" buttons accessible from the menu screen hidden in Kirby's yellow snow...or haven't you found that yet?
STEP FIVE: If you look very closely at the flickering DVD opening screen you will see a small K Mark flash by during one of the numerous screen mess ups. It is important to hit the START button precisely as this K Mark appears on screen, anything too early or late will send you to the first menu screen. If you miss your chance wait for that particular menu to come around again. The opening menu will repeat itself. A precisely timed hit of this K Mark will reveal a creature with a map. He will tell you "It's a secret to everybody" then reveal to you a secret pathway to the K Mark behind the gates of the first menu screen. This map screen will automatically jump to the first menu screen so be sure to memorize the path commands.
STEP SIX: Starting at the secret K Mark hidden in the center of Karnov's shadow on the first menu screen, follow the exact directional commands given by the creature in the map room. Any incorrect combination of the directions will send you back to the first K Mark again. Using the directional buttons on your DVD remote, or the arrow keys on a computer, enter the following directional commands: LEFT, DOWN, RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, UP, LEFT, then hit the ENTER button. This will open the "Ye Olde Clue Shoppe" menu. Take your choice of any of the three clues the man has for sale. Be sure to come back again and access the other two clues, all three will be of use on your quest.
STEP SEVEN: Operating under the assumption that most people believe you get what you pay for, we'll start with the 20-coin clue, however these need not be accessed in any particular order. The 20-coin clue reads "The yellow snow hides a secret nineteen paces high" and refers to the hidden menu accessed by clicking the yellow K Mark found at the beginning of Kirby's piss signature on the snowy mountain of the Bonus Level menu. The staircase from the old man's room will lead you there. Clicking on this yellow K Mark will reveal another old man who urges you to "Push any button you want" as a full screen full of little K Mark buttons appear. As you may have already found while searching for clues, all but one of these buttons will bring up the "Wrong" message and send you back to the opening screen. You will also find that only the designated start point K Mark will appear highlighted when selected so keeping track of your movement will be imperative to finding the correct button. From the yellow start point and using the directional buttons on your DVD remote (arrow keys on a computer), move exactly 19 steps upward then hit ENTER. This button will bring up another clue leading you to the precise location of the hidden Bonus Level 2.
STEP EIGHT: After clicking the correct button found in the menu hidden in the yellow snow a man will appear with another clue reading "The secret lies in the darkness of the seventh stage." The man is referring to the Karnov movie chapters accessed from the Stage Select menu. The staircase that appears will take you there directly. Once at the Stage Select menu you will find that only 6 movie Stages exist, however an observant gamer will notice that the highlight cursor disappears when scrolling from Stage 6 back to Stage 1. This is where the invisible Seventh Stage is hidden. Clicking on this stage will bring up a dark black screen that appears to be empty, though clicking ENTER will bring up a "Locked" message and send you back to the Stage Select menu. Hidden in this darkness is the entrance to the hidden Bonus Level 2 however only with a key can one unlock its secrets. It sounds like you'll need another clue. Proceed back to "Ye Olde Clue Shoppe" located behind the gates on the first menu screen. You do remember how to get behind those gates don't you?
STEP NINE: The 10-coin clue. The 10-coin clue for sale at Ye Olde Clue Shoppe reads "The Deacon can't keep secrets." Now if you are a Galaxy454 film buff or at least a fan of the Karnov film you should know that "The Deacon" is the name commonly associated with Karnov's lead actor F. Deacon Taylor. Since we are being told he can't keep secrets we would probably like to hear him speak right? The staircase that appears will lead us to the Bonus Level menu, however this time the cursor is highlighting the K Mark next to the audio "Commentary" feature. Deacon will reveal a crucial clue as to the whereabouts of the hidden pass key at some point during this audio commentary. Impatient gamers can skip ahead to yet another unadvertised Seventh Stage to access the clue directly.
STEP TEN: The 5-coin clue. The 5-coin clue works in direct correlation with the information the 10-coin clue is to help you discover: Deacon and Adam's explanation of where to find the key. The gist of their conversation is this, Deacon heard PoPo had the key on the mountain but he got tired of waiting for him to give it. The mountain Deacon refers to is the snowy mountain of the Bonus Level menu. Fans of the game Ice Climber will recognize PoPo as the small man dressed in blue who, if you wait long enough, will pop up from the mountain top and urge you to hurry up and make your selection. Adam then reveals in the audio commentary clue that PoPo is actually designed to help the clue stay hidden and that you must remain patient and disobey PoPo's command. He reveals that NaNa will eventually arrive and give you the key. Ice Climber fans will recognize that NaNa is the name of PoPo's female counterpart and is dressed in red. The 5-coin clue serves as a refresher course to the names and colors of these two characters. So what does this all mean? Basically it means wait. If you just leave the Bonus Level menu run without taking PoPo's advice of pushing a button, NaNa will appear and reveal to you the pass key. You may want to have a pen and paper handy though, in true Nintendo fashion, it's probably not something you can memorize at first glance. If you miss it NaNa will reveal this pass key every third uninterrupted pass of the Bonus Level menu. Anytime a selection is made the menu will be reset back to one.
STEP ELEVEN: At this point you should have all the information you need to uncover the hidden Bonus Level 2, you just need to put it all together. With key in hand, return to the darkness of the Seventh Stage as previously instructed by the old man in the yellow snow clue. If you've already forgotten what I'm talking about, see Step Seven and Eight. Once back at the dark black screen, quickly enter the pass key using the directional controls on your DVD remote (arrow keys on a computer). In case you forgot to write it down, here it is: UP, UP, UP, RIGHT, DOWN, DOWN, RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, UP, RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, LEFT, UP, then hit ENTER. The dark screen lasts about exactly as long as it should take to enter this pass key so, also in true Nintendo fashion, time is of the essence. The correct directional combination will unlock the Bonus Level 2 menu featuring three different paths, each containing a separate hidden bonus feature. An incorrect pass key will display a "Locked" message and return you to the Stage Select menu. Once you have accessed a feature from the Bonus Level 2 you will be returned to the first menu screen, however this time there will be a direct link back to BL2 to spare you the tedious process of getting back. Got all that?
